Thomas A. Lyons, MD, FACS

Dr. Thomas Lyons, MD, FACS, is the founder of Neuroscience Group, which he established in 1991 alongside Dr. Steven Price with the goal of bringing advanced neurosurgical care to Northeast Wisconsin and eliminating the need for patients to travel to Madison, Milwaukee, or Mayo Clinic for complex neurological treatment. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Dayton and his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed a General Surgery internship and residency at Mercy Hospital, a Neurosurgery residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and a fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Before his medical career, Dr. Lyons served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971, including a tour in Vietnam with the 93rd Evacuation Hospital and First Air Cavalry Division and a posting at Fort Riley, Kansas with the First Infantry Division. He retired from full-time neurosurgical practice in 2007 and currently provides Independent Medical Evaluations and medical record and peer review services.

He also served as President of the Wisconsin Neurosurgical Society and as Chief of Surgery at ThedaCare Hospitals, reflecting a career of both clinical and professional leadership in neurosurgery in Wisconsin.

Dr. Lyons is the founder of Neuroscience Group, which he co-founded with Dr. Steven Price in 1991. At that time, patients in Northeast Wisconsin with complex neurological and spinal conditions routinely had to travel to Madison, Milwaukee, or Mayo Clinic for advanced care. Dr. Lyons founded the practice specifically to change that, building a regional neuroscience center that could deliver the highest level of neurological care close to home. Under his leadership, the practice grew substantially, and the model he established — comprehensive, independent, multidisciplinary neuroscience care in Northeast Wisconsin — continues to define Neuroscience Group today. He retired from full-time surgical practice in 2007 after more than 15 years of building the practice into what it is now.

During his active surgical career, Dr. Lyons specialized in the full breadth of neurosurgical care, including brain and spinal cord tumors, brain aneurysms and vascular malformations, brain and spinal trauma, stroke prevention and treatment, and degenerative spine conditions. He also had a special interest in pediatric neurosurgery, reflecting his fellowship training at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and in community-based neurological trauma prevention through programs such as Think First, a national brain and spinal cord injury prevention initiative.

Dr. Lyons chose medicine because of the challenge and the excitement of making a difference in people's lives. His founding vision for Neuroscience Group reflected that motivation directly: to build a practice that would make the most advanced neurosurgical care accessible to patients in Northeast Wisconsin without requiring them to leave their community, their families, or their support systems. His commitment to community education through programs like Think First also reflected a belief that preventing neurological injury was as important as treating it.

During his career, Dr. Lyons treated the full spectrum of brain, spine, and peripheral nerve conditions, including brain tumors, spinal cord tumors, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, stroke, and degenerative spine disease. His pediatric neurosurgery fellowship gave him additional training in conditions affecting children. He retired from active surgical practice in 2007 and now focuses on Independent Medical Evaluations and medical record review.

Dr. Lyons retired from full-time neurosurgical practice in 2007. He currently provides Independent Medical Evaluations and medical record and peer review services through Neuroscience Group and remains affiliated with the Wisconsin Medical Society. His legacy as the founder of Neuroscience Group continues to shape the practice's mission of delivering comprehensive, independent neuroscience care to patients across Northeast Wisconsin.

Dr. Lyons served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971, including a combat tour in Vietnam with the 93rd Evacuation Hospital and the First Air Cavalry Division from 1969 to 1970, and a subsequent posting at Fort Riley, Kansas with the First Infantry Division and 2/16 Rangers from 1970 to 1971. His military service preceded his medical career and reflects a lifelong commitment to service that continued through his founding of Neuroscience Group and decades of neurosurgical care in Northeast Wisconsin.
