What Is a Compression Fracture?
The spine is made up of individual bones called vertebrae. A compression fracture occurs when one of these vertebrae weakens and collapses under normal, everyday forces.
This type of vertebral compression fracture is most commonly linked to osteoporosis, a condition that reduces bone density and strength. Compression fractures happen most often in the thoracic (mid-back) and lumbar (lower back) spine, but they can also occur in the sacrum.
